Bikes: CoMo Speedster 2003, Trek 5200, CAAD 9, Fred 2004

The only CF bike I've ridden any serious distance is my '99 Trek 5200. I believe that's the frame on which Lance won his first Tour. Not the reason I bought it, just saying. I have never ridden a bike of any other material that came close to providing the speed and comfort of this bike. I ride it on Tricomps pumped to 140 lbs. on low spoke count wheels. It never bothers my hands or butt or tires me, no matter how bad the road surface. I love to ride steep chipseal rollers on it. My fave, because it's fun and I can pick up a good bit of time. And it's a primitive CF bike, though it's how I got my moniker.

I was out with a buddy, doing a mountain century. I was on my Trek, he was on a LBS loaner Wilier, boutique wheels, racing tires, etc. He couldn't feel the difference between smooth asphalt and chipseal. IIRC, that was a 14.5 lb. bike. I could feel the difference on my 18.5 lb. Trek, though it wasn't objectionable. My buddy didn't buy the Wilier, BTW. He didn't think the difference between it and his current CF brevet bike was worth spending the money on. I can understand that. Upgrade? Upgrade to what?
