It is generally illegal to ride a bicycle on a controlled-access highway in Texas. Interstates are controlled-access just about everywhere, but US highways are often not controlled-access, and there is usually an designated alternate route (such as ALT 90 through Houston, for example) using surface streets when the US highway enters an urban area and becomes a controlled-access highway. US 287 is not an Interstate, but a US Highway. I am not familiar with US 287 north of the DFW area, but US 90 is near me and it is possible to ride bicycles on the nice wide shoulders. Perhaps a North Texas resident can post the actual details of 287.
