Don't ditch the crank. I used to run 7400 on a Paramount, but swapped it for full 7700 mainly to get interchangeability with other 9 speed stuff. But looking at your pics made me miss the look of my old group, especially the crank.

Fwiw, my first bike was an 89' Schwinn 564. I still have and ride it, essentially stock.
