you mean you pass people going up the stairs only to have them run past you in an effort to show that they can walk faster than you?? that's never happened to me. i've never gotten in a speedwalking race on the sidewalk. and in cabs or driving most people all stop at red lights. i rarely have someone blow though a stop light for the sole purpose of racing me. your confusing daily city living with the racing attitude described in the thread. most people in the city are concentrated on going where they are going as fast as possible and ignoring others, which is different than targeting someone and proving you're the 'best'.
