I'd agree that it's tough to compare similar bikes on a short ride and it's hard to rule out differences in setup, but most serious riders would be able to pick up the huge differences between a Madone and roubaix on a short ride.
Unfortunately, for those of use who aren't what you'd call "serious" riders, we need to try a few styles of bikes out sometimes to know what we want.
