I know I'm reviving a very old thread but I was bored this afternoon and decided to google my mountain bike to see if it's ever talked about on the internet and by golly it is. I had the same one as the poster in post #15. I bought it when I was in high school when I lived in Hawaii back in 1990 with my dad. I traded a lower level Trek mountain bike in for the Nishiki Arile due to the popularity of the elevated chainstay setup. It was a good setup for running the hills and the brush and weeds over in Hawaii and these bikes could take a beating. I went in the Army in 91 till 93 and the mountain bike was in Ft. Drum (Watertown) N.Y. with me during that time.
I got out of the Army in1993 and moved to South Dakota and the mountain bike came with me. It's had a few front aluminum rims and a rear one as well replaced since then. I've been meaning to get all the cables replaced lately but haven't quite got around to it as over the last year and a half I've had a ton of back surgeries and not worked in a year due to a nerve condition created by one of those surgical procedures.
Hopefuly someday I'll be able to bike again but time will tell as I just had a spinal cord stimulator installed to try to help my pain. The bike may wind up being 40yrs old and geting passed onto my son someday if I can't ever ride it again. One thing for sure is it is a great bike and It's been ridden a few thousand miles betwen asphalt and off road trail riding and has always stood up to me and I am a big guy at 6ft 3in and 250lbs it's also a big bike meant for a big boy as well.
Since I'm a new member I'll have to read the forum rules on Monday for posting pics and maybe get some pics up of it this week even though they'll be upside down pics as the bike is stored away in the ceiling of the garage. Maybe some more people with this bike will come out of the wood work. By the way when I bought mine I replaced the handlebars and use to have a neon yellow bikerack on it for a insulated cooler I use to take trail riding and the handlebar tape was neon yellow. It all went good with the yellow on the bike.
When I purchased the bike in 1990 it cost me around 1,000 with the add ons minus my trade of a worn out Trek. I was in Hawaii so prices are a premium over there as well...........
Live on the Nishiki Ariel !!!!!!!
