You can patent a specific design, but there are lots of ways to design a magnetic coupling. It's not exactly an industry secret. In fact, Kurt Manufacturing very likely ported the idea from another industrial application they came across in the contract manufacturing side of their business. The other trainer companies didn't think of it because they came from a different industry background.
