So what's the deal with disc brakes vs traditional "rim clampers"?

I've noticed that there seems to be very few road bikes with disc brakes. I suspect that their stopping power is at least as good as the rim clampers, but I still haven't seen many road bikes utilizing them.
It would seem reasonable to me that disc brakes might be appropriate for carbon wheelsets where the clamping brakes tend to cause concern about overheating, excessive rim wear, etc. but I can also see how discs might exert greater forces on the rim/spokes while braking.
Is there a reason (or 10) why more road bikes don't use the disc brakes?
I can't believe it to be a cost issue, as there are plenty of high-priced road bikes.

The hub and disc might weigh more than the standard clampers, but I would guess that there are comparable versions.
I also think that disc brakes might work better in wet conditions.

Anyway, this mindless Saturday rambling has been brought to you by IHOP and the country-fired steak that is sitting like a brick in my belly.
