I had thought that with all the stuff on the internets there would be a picture of the pawls so I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been.
Lesson learned.
I was too lazy to get my digital camera out and ASSumed to myself that the complete information to put it all back together would be out there online should I need it. My own fault in the end. I was going too fast and acting like a cowboy instead of being more methodical like I usually am.
The happy ending is that it forced me to take apart the other hub to discover how bad it was. I haven't had a chance to put many miles on my dad's old bike since I had just refurbished it last fall before it got nasty and I didn't want to ride it in the slush and salt of chicago. The oil I added last fall and the few miles I put on it just loosened up all the crud for me so the cleaning was easier.
