Drops isn't always the most aero position... I've noticed that I can get much more aero with my forearms on the tops, invisible-aero-bar style. This can get uncomfortable rather quickly, but I only use this for those bursts when I'm really going all-out. I've even found that riding the hoods, but dropping my forearms so that they are parallel to the ground, to be more aero than just riding in the drops. The drop position, however, is my most powerful, so it's good to know when to use what.
