Herr Rohloff did a reasonable design: a 7 speed hub, 3 x 3speeds with ratios in equal steps 13.5%

then Used them twice with a range shift..

Externally Schlumpf Mountain drive crank, and a AW3 hub do similar,
low in High range is followed by high in low range,
It's just that the German hub sequences that for you,

where the crank button gets a tap with your foot,
as your hand flicks the trigger shifter on the bar
from low to high as you Downshift the range

Just Sturmey doesn't have needle bearings on the planetary gears..
