Running the light is not always an option. I was stuck at a light recently where it cycled between cross-traffic and oncoming left-turn lane (across me). It would have been suicide for me to run the red.
A biker (motor) came up and we discussed the problem for a bit until some opposite through traffic tripped the light our way, and we both agreed that it was a nice day to be riding.
