Those jobs aren't that interesting. It's just that reality shows are ridiculously cheap to produce (relatively speaking). Just get someone who wants to be on camera, give a guy or two some hand-held cameras, and a "story" is fabricated in the editing room.
Its fairly easy to dismiss your post as being overly cynical, but after talking to the host/star of that show "Hoarders" a few months back, he pretty much said the exact same thing as you.
