I do not expect this question be a controversy at all. The question is simple. I went to a very good mechanic at a LBS. I asked about a set of wheels for my new Jamis Sputnik that will support my 230 pound riding weight and not flex. My stock DA 22 wheels flex a lot. The mechanic quoted me at $550.00. He says these wheels are around 1500, which is a great weight. He says I will not be aware of any flex and he says these wheels will last. He named several different hubs he could use. He only listed a few wheels he would use. 32 spokes each wheel.
Reasonable price?
You can find some decent off-the-shelf wheels for much much less. But, if you are gonna spend $550, get some Mavic Ellipse. They will hold you just fine. I rode them at 250lbs and loved them. I know a guy bigger than me that rides them.
Any decent 32 or 36 spoke wheels should be OK.
