A Stage Race.
My First Stage Race - Crit, TT, Road Race, Cat 4 ('C') category. Technically an omnium I suppose as it was points and not time based.
Crit - 35 minutes, windy, flat. One flat out sweeper, three tighter corners. ~= 35 starters. Thoughts:
"Oh wow, crits hurt different than road races, I forgot that."
"OW OW OW. 30 minutes left? CRAP."
"Why is that guy hammering right now? He doesn't have a gap."
"I hope that isn't rain, the off camber last corner into the finish is going to be scary if it does."
"&%#! attacks. Owowowowow."
"Whew. Survived that. 15th or so in the group and oh. At the back."
"15? I can safely tailgun, w00t!"
"5 laps to go, hooray."
"Oh, we're slowing down. Heh. This is a mistake guys."
"One to go, move up hard, nice hole on the oh crap, car ahead, at least it's moving."
"Around the corner #2 in 5th, 800m to go? Here I GOGOGOGO!"
"Coast the corner sit, sprint 100%. Coast the corner, stand, accelerate 100m to finish."
"Shouldn't have let me rest gentlemen."
1st
TT - Flat, windy, threats of rain.
Summary: Ouch. 7th.
Road Race - 64km, same circuit I won on a couple of weeks ago. Much better weather and a deeper field this time around. Half the field tired from yesterday's racing, the other half only showed up to Sunday's road race. Current 1st in GC was second in both the crit and TT on Saturday.
Report: Lots of attacks early on, nothing sticking. Tried to get something started, but with >50km to go and only two of us, I sat up quickly. Later: Get berated for riding kinda slowly on the front. Laugh at the guy and indicate it's a race and he's welcome to go faster.
More attacks, a couple of laps later, two guys had a solid gap one of whom I knew was pretty strong.
Then three other guys, two of which I knew were strong flew past the front of the field. Quick calculation: 3 known strong, 2 unknowns off the front. This is the race RIGHT NOW. Jump hard.
I look back 30 seconds later and #1 on GC is on my wheel and there is a serious gap back to the peloton. Quick calculation: If I sit up, I probably won't win the GC and I'm watching the winning break go up the road. Look at #1 on GC, "#!&? you for being attentive. Let's go."
At some point in the next 5km two of us joined the three who joined the two. I have no recollection of when. Then it was a 7 man breakaway and with a bit of help back in the field, we got two or three minutes.
I blow up completely with a half lap to go and finish a minute behind the break but a couple of minutes ahead of the field for 7th. Good enough to keep 2nd in the GC and upgrade to Cat 3.
Today? I am eating pizza.
