That was my reaction too -- i tried that out a couple years back, but my hands kept coming to the ends and looking for brake levers. i finally just sacrificed the "moustache look" and just have MTB brake levers at the end, like an inverted three-speed cockpit.

Could be because you never compensated for the longer reach that Moustache bars have. One normally needs significantly shorter and taller stems for these bars. Stems 60-80mm in length are not uncommon for these bars.
