Detroit is nearly 140 square miles with housing bargains throughout. Some sections are more challenged than others, but you don't need to buy a house in them or even ride through them if it scares you. I've been riding all across this city for over a decade now and my biggest public safety concerns remain in the suburbs with aggressive/road rage drivers.
That said, I still don't dress like a Skittle and ride my high-end road bike through some poorer neighborhoods simply because I think it can be disrespectful.
