i live in nyc and keep my bike locked outside in front of the building. i work right across the street from a police checkpoint so there are cops maybe 20feet from it at any given time. Although I do not believe they would be aware of a smooth bike thief it is a good deterant.

While I can store my bike next to my desk, I can only bring my bike up through the freight elevator which stops running at 5pm on the dot...unfortunately that's no excuse to leave early
