My stoker/wife uses toe clips.
My progression was from toe clips to power grips to SPD clipless.
A real retro/oldschool toe clip user would use cleats on old school cycling shoes, just like racers used to do.
I still have two pairs of shoes with slotted cleats which I use with the bikes mentioned in my above post. Still like 'em too.
