I live out in South East Ohio (Athens, nice riding routes) and we get a lot of driver hostility. Majority are the rednecks that live in the boons with their rusted out SUVs/trucks. If we give the one finger salute or pull out pepper spray or something, I'm pretty sure we would be run off the road. One of the older guys I ride with just smiles and waves. Thats pretty much all we can do. We do have a bike path but its normally crowded and is pretty boring (and flat!).
I also find it strange that a cop told one of you to ride on the sidewalk. Its illegal here to ride on the sidewalk, my friend even got pulled over by a cop for doing so (was riding on it a little bit to get to our meeting place)
I just think about how my bike is probably worth a good percentage or more than their cars and how most of them would never be able to ride the 70 miles I just did. I also noticed that the city put up a lot of "Share the road with bikes" signs. I am waiting for the moment when someone yells at me and I can point up to one of those signs.
