Planning to ride from Portland (Astoria) to Denver (Longmont actually) beginning in early June 2011. Intend to do it credit card style so need to follow a populated, paved route. Thinking that the Google bike route has too much unpaved routing and with a lack of paved frontage roads I-80 isn't a good choice in Wyo. Thinking of going through Salt Lake and using US 40 across much of CO. Help!
Have you looked at the Adventure Cycle's
TransAm route? It passes just on the other side of the Rockies from Denver. You could turn off the trail at Walden and go over either Cameron Pass or Trail Ridge Road. You could continue on to Kremmling and go over either Trail Ridge or Berthoud Pass or you could go to Silverthorn and get to Denver over Loveland Pass. The route isn't exactly set up for credit card but then there aren't too many routes that cross the Western US that are. Lots of spaces without places
