I did laugh at that one. But not at you. Yes! Mistakes are good! Hopefully pretty soon you'll be making bigger ones -- that would mean you are attempting to fix more problems yourself. I'm a total hapless blunderer and I usually have to do everything twice, or ten times... but that's how I learn. I'm actually the only person who I ride with who knows how to do any repairs, emergency or otherwise, and I am noooo expert.
I'd spend a couple of hours reading Sheldon Brown's site (he has a lot of stuff for beginners). Everyone benefits from knowing a bit about how their bike works. Every year I learn a couple of new skills. Eventually I might not be so useless!
