Whatever he was doing, he was doing it faster with those wheels than standard ones. Since you know nothing of this man, for all we know, he did a detailed analysis of how much faster he would be with those wheels compared to the alternatives and based on his situation found the increase in performance worth the (unknown) cost of those wheels. Further, he might have lost fifty pounds in the months leading to that event and 10's of pounds since.

Oh wait, I forgot it's an either or proposition. He couldn't have been losing weight if he had Zipp wheels.
