I'm wondering if I should upgrade the u-lock to something smaller and thicker.
Smaller U-locks definitely work best, but sometimes it is hard to find good posts for them (hard to reach around.) If your bike is expensive, the cost of replacing the U-lock for a better one is peanuts in terms of security and peace of mind. I would also upgrade the cable lock as soon as you get a chance. I've read that cable locks with an incorporated lock work the best. Otherwise, plan on spending an additional $20 for a good stand-alone lock for your cable. Bicycle security can be expensive if one wants to do it right.
