The weight of any carried items could also have a negative effect. It just depends on how far I have to go.
I'll tell you this though: Riding 47 miles isn't a problem. Riding 4 miles to the machine shop with car parts in a backpack? Far more difficult than you'd realize!
Hence trailers and pannier racks and bags. With my trailer and pannier racks, and pannier bags I probably have more cargo space then those new "Smartcars." You those new super small two seater cars that we're seeing on the roads nowadays. Or even an Xtracycle, and a trailer, or even a Long John Bike. There are ways to make it work, one just has to be willing to try.
