I am of the opinion that testing a patch is more likely to make it fail. Tubes never stretch much inside a tire, but in your living room they can triple in size at low PSI. I think the stretching puts more stress on the patch/tube interface than regular inflation where the pressure is actually trying to hold the patch in place against the inside of the tire.
