What technology they are talking about is limited to the larger public transit systems. However, there are many systems that only have PDF's of their bus times and others have none! I would like an Apple App that will use GPS technology to tell me what bus or buses are coming down the street and how many minutes. Then with a click, it will show me the route the bus is going and how much it would cost. Then it would point out where the closest bus stop is so I don't have to waste time looking.
That would be so ideal!
There are many small transit systems in the country that have such software available. All that is required is for them to make their avl data available. Indeed several very small systems have implemented such avl systems using cellular phones with gps.
