Sometimes the wheel can be true and spokes can still vary in tension, so yes, the life of spokes is greatly dependent on the wheel build.
Replace that spoke and see if another one brakes any time soon. If it does, it's very likely that you are gonna need another set of spokes and a wheel that is built better if you don't want to keep replacing the spokes.
I've heard this somewhere and I think it's very true because it happened to me 3 times on 3 separate wheels. If spokes are nearing the end of their life, it's like a popcorn. When one or two pop, the others are very likely to follow.
