I put Avid shorty 6 brakes on mine and they do okay. Mine made a bunch of noise and shuddered initially, but after readjusting the pads and switching the rear pads (Avid rim wranglers) they improved alot. I think there is just enough braking power to meet my needs, but I'm not doing an major descents like you are either.
