I love my steel bikes - an updated Ritchey Road Logic with 2008 SRAM Force components on it (around 19 lbs with pedals), and I love my Miyata 914, also updated with modern components (Ultegra 10 6600) with Dura Ace rear derailleur. In fact, my Ritchey is probably my most smooth riding road bike. BUT, it just doesn't feel as fast as my Cervelo. So depending on what you like, and you're willing to drop the $ (note that carbon bikes has come down in price very significantly)...get whatever makes you happy! Ever consider Ti? I bought my Litespeed Blue Ridge frame set (like new condition) for $750. Never rust and you'll likely die before the bike does. Me, I love all bikes.
