HELP! Shimano RSX front derailer - cable routing and adjustement.

Hello all,

It's been a few day since I bought a second-hand Decathlon Cobra 520 road bike equipped with Shimano RSX rear and front derailers and shifters (3x7 setup). The bike was neglected by a previous owner so I had to take it apart piece by piece and clean it.
The left shifter wasn't working - I got it fixed thanks to the bikeforums and loads of WD40 - now the shifter works again like a charm, but the front derailer does not.
Every time I try to shift the front derailer is just not being moved far enough to shift to the middle chainring and after that when I try to shift to outer chainring again it's not moving far enough. I was playing with the cable tension - to no avail, I checked what Sheldon had to say as far as the adjustement goes and he mentioned alternative cable routing, but I can't figure out how I could route the cable differently for the front derailer.
As far as I know the cranks and chainring are original, but I wasn't wise enough to check the cable routing BEFORE I put it all apart - in all cases the front derailer wasn't working properly when I bought the bike with the shifter stuck and all...
Any ideas, suggestions, please. Help from the fellow forum members much appreciated. Can post pictures if that helps...
Thanks
