I've got to chime in and say that the people who say "you can't get vintage components anymore" are just flat wrong. Of course you can. They come on other vintage bikes. For a commuter, a BB spindle is a BB spindle; and so what if the one you pull out of that old Raleigh is a couple MM longer? You'll get used to it in about a mile. Ball bearings are available through McMaster and Aurora, races can be pressed out and replaced, and QBP can get replacement cones for hubs. Spokes are spokes, chains are chains, tires are tires.
It's not about the bike, except when it is. New aluminum just does not have the same ride as old steel. And, for me, it's about ease of repairability. The nicest thing about vintage steel is that it is basically infinitely repairable, barring force majeure.
