If they are anodized, and I dont know if they are, by taking all the necessary safety precautions(long sleeves, googles, chemical resistant rubber gloves, etc) you can remove the anodizing with eazy-off and 000 steel wool after a few scrub coats. This leaves a nice surface that is smooth and easy to polish out, or finish otherwise. I did this myself with a super ugly and scratched blue Pake crankset, which I polished to a mirror shine afterward.
