And just what's wrong with a mountain bike? A suspension free MTB, especially vintage ones, make great tourers/commuters. Sounds like you are more into the idea of a bike than the reality and practicality. Stick slick tires on any MTB and make a nice commuter. You can even put something like these on it and make it look pretty.
