steamdog, Car free is going to require more flexability/versatility that what's available with a FG/SS, IMHO. You're going to need a rack and panniers for the grocery store trips, a place to store foul weather gear and so on. I like 10 Wheels' suggestion and have your bikesnob friend help finish the assembly.

SS/FG bikes are great fun and a FG is wonderful for spin training, but when you need a station wagon you shouldn't buy a two seater.
