+1 I do this for two main reasons:
1) it's the law, at least here in Mass
2) if you think about it, the other drivers on the road are most likely paying attention to the EMG vehicle, and checking rear view mirrors as they are diving for the curb to stop...I figure the safest place for me, is completely off the road. I'll usually hop up onto the sidewalk and leg down, or onto someones front lawn and the same, otherwise as far to the right as I can get and stay the f out of the way.
