I'm surprised more people haven't made this connection. While I can't say for sure that it didn't happen, I think it is very, very far fetched. Almost cartoonish.
As for pit bulls, I'll toss in my $.02...The trouble with pit bulls, as with some other dog breeds, is that they require a lot more responsibility and awareness on the part of the owner than a typical dog. Unfortunately, many of the people who tend to want a pit bull (a "tough" dog) do not have the intelligence, respect, or skill to properly socialize them, or even recognise the potential danger that owning one brings with it. These dogs are not demons, but they have characteristics as a breed which make them potentially dangerous. They can be explosively aggressive, and once in "fight mode" are very hard to stop. Anyone who has seen, or tried to separate two pits that are fighting knows this-and I have several times. It is extremely frightening-these dogs will not give up, no matter what. When they fight, they lose all connection with pain, or any reality. This is what people mistakenly call a lock jaw, even though the jaw of a pit bull is no different physiologically than that of other dogs. I am fairly certain that if one of these relatively small dogs wanted to kill me, they would have little trouble doing it-and I'm a big strong 200lb guy. Pit Bulls, along with other breeds of dog are simply too much for most people. It's much like giving a top fuel drag car to a teenager for their 16th birthday.
I really like pits. Generally, they are calm, affectionate, and intelligent dogs. Very independant, and fun to have around. But most of the ones I encounter have not been trained properly, and are not handled carefully enough. This is largely the ower's fault, but it is far easier to villify and outlaw the dog. The trouble with this approach is, the people who breed pits for fighting or whatever in their backyard or trailer don't care about what is legal. They are going to do it anyway, and continue producing violent, unpredictable and dangerous dogs.
