Depends. The shifters pull the cable 'x' millimeters per click. The cassette cogs are 'y' millimeters apart. Depending on the geometry of the derailleur, it will move 'y' or 'z' millimeters laterally up & down the cassette with each click. Different makes & models move different amounts. Some are compatible, some are not. The Jtek Shiftmate is one way to compensate for incompatible equipment by changing the amount of rear derailleur movement for each click.
Bottom line spacing between cassette cogs needs to match levers indexing thats all 9 speed matched to 9 speed and 10 to 10, everything below 6-8 spacing is the same if I recall.
Now that said their is a RD ratio of 1:1 and 2:1 pull ratio - MB verses RB which can not be mismatched.
