This is a really good point that doesn't come up too often. You can make any complete geared bike into an SS from $10-$20. A fixed gear is much more expensive because it almost always involves buying a new rear wheel.
If you get a new wheel, just go for a 700c if your brake pads can move down 4mm. Your tire choices will be a million times better.
I splurged and spent $40 on a new 1/8 chain, new tappered crank bolts, freewheel, and freewheel removal tool.
