You've cut my sentence off early. I spooled my tape measure out 260mm to see how far it extended above and tried to visualize whether that was enough room for the top of the headset to do and also a stem.

Anyway, I just measured. 190mm, not including cups.

BCRIDER, thanks a million for the detailed poor man's kludge version of how to do the job. It's cool you took the time to do that.

Used to be that everything I did on a bike was kind of a kludge. I've been building up tools, and now only half the crap I do is! I wonder if the headset that you recommended might be "taller," thus limiting room for the stem... hmm.
