I don't have a regular commute at the moment but when I did, I geared my bikes according to my commute, so naturally I tended to use every distinct gear, not necessarily every day, but at least every week as conditions varied. Not all bikes have the same range, but taken together their ranges are 45" to 108", with 6-8 useful ratios each.
