Slipping Chain

Hi all
I would appreciate some help with this! My bike chain (on a Raleigh Record Sprint 501 racer) recently snapped and I lost the pins. I had a new chain fitted at a bike shop but on some sporadic occasions the chain keeps slipping at the rear while pedalling and attempting to shift gear.
The chain has slipped both on downshifting as well as upshifting. I noticed that the problem seems to be that the chain does not always go into the rear sprockets but remains somewhat on top of the spikes of a sprocket. This means the pedals turn in a void since the chain fails to engage with the sprocket it is on.
My bike is 10speed. I now looked up the chain packet label which I had kept and it says "Index 5, 6 & 7 speeds HG/UG". Does this mean that the chain might not be compatible with my 10speed gear system? How can I make sure the chain I have is the right one to fit my sprockets? Any other ideas what could be wrong?
