Thumb shifters were dropped after Mr shimano came out with the idea of brake/shifters in 1988 and made it to the market in 1991. Thumb shifters require finesse to hunt down the right gear and moving your hand away from the brake to switch gears. Also a pain if your trying to shift while cycling uphill. Spend the extra $49 for the bikes Direct bike. If your not strapped for cash, talk to your Local Bike shop for advice (not walmart or target)
