FOr what its worth (not much since I haven't built nearly as many wheels as Psimet), but I used to be obsessed with trying to find the best possible lacing pattern, and I've come to conclude that the most conservative approach (using an adequate number of spokes with 2x or 3x on both sides), works out best, even if the spoke tension is around 2:1.
This is my experience as well. Most of the broken spokes I have seen were from radial sides of rear wheels and wheels with an inadequate number of spokes on them for the weight of the rider.
