I'm pretty sickened as you all are. Not just as cyclist but as a weekend racer at the lowest regional level. I almost feel like its a personal loss because of all the near misses that I've had racing. I think that's probably a little selfish. I wonder if any racers feel the same way.
I've been in 3 races this year that required a helicopter evacuation of badly injured racer- Central Coast Circuit, Turlock Lake Road Race and Wente Road Race. It was just fortune that I wasn't in the crash at the CCCX (where are racer had a facial fracture and many others injured). Its a real reminder about the dangers of this sport...and the risks we put ourselves in...even if we don't get paid to do it.
