Panasonic made great bikes during that timeframe (I have three right now, all badged Schwinns).
+1 I never like to see seat posts inserted that far, have the shop verify it is properly lubricated and not stuck, ditto the stem as well. Assuming those items are fine (and they probably are), looks like you bought a really sweet bike!!
