Need advice (HELP), standard or compact crank with an 11-28 cassette

Need some advice on which crankset to go with standard or compact, which would be most beneficial for me. I’ve asked this same question to several LBS and I get the same kind of response, “no big difference or about the same.”

Some quick info: I’m using a 11-28 cassette and currently use a compact crank. I’ve been running the 11/28 for about 6 months or so and it feels pretty good. Besides using it on the trainer I’ve only used the 34 tooth up front once and that was after a long hilly ride going up my final hill/climb. I do cross-chain a lot and I know it’s not good to do that. On any given group ride I’ll use just about every gear in the back, but I’ll never switch from the 50 upfront. I prefer to do the hills and I’ve been doing those lately, but I still like the flats and the speed associated with it. I'm in decent shape, I ride 3-4 times a week (100 or miles a weeks), if that makes a difference. No real intention to race, but I'll try keep pace with the A or fast B group. I live in Atlanta and spend most of my time riding in local group rides though hilly neighborhoods.

I’ve been reading about the difference between compact and standard crankset, which has really confused me now. For my particular likes and comments noted above, which would be better for me? Would going to a standard crank, stop me from cross chaining? I just need some advice, thanks.
