I take the lane whenever the lane is not obstructed by motor vehicles, at which point I splint lanes. I never ride on the right edge of the right lane.
On my commute home from work I would do this more, But its generally 1 to 3 AM when I get off work.. I'm scared shiiteless of drunk drivers, but it's the quickest route home. I do take the lane to avoid turn lanes though. During my ride to work it's quite the opposite. I take the lane often then.
