Road handlebars come in 2 major sizes, 31.8 (oversize) this is becoming the most common size for new bikes & 25.4 for older bikes, with 26.0 as a minor size.

If you take the face plate off the stem, this will probably have the size etched on the stem, and the part for the handlebar covered by this.
