The first bike I ever tried to fix up was a old hiawatha I found in a alley. I grinded off the paint and repainted it flat black. At the time I had very little know how of certain aspects of bikes. I never took the headset cups off and I gave the frame a flat black and gloss white paint job. Anyway I though it came out pretty good, if you are carefull you can do wonders with blue painters tape and plastic bags.
I never finished it and yes I know just ignore the crank, soon afterwards I picked up a pug and pretty much any bike over 25 or so pounds just seemed to slow. I guess the handle bars are worth money though, the frame is shot anyway it has a stuck seat post.
